STEAM CLIENT · LOGIN TROUBLESHOOTING

Steam stuck on “Loading User Data”? Check the outage first.

If Steam hangs immediately after sign-in, do not start by reinstalling it. First determine whether Steam is having a wider service problem; then work through the low-risk client fixes below.

October 26 incident update

A large wave of Steam users reported an endless “Loading User Data” screen on October 26. Reports later fell and the service appeared to recover for most people. This was not an official Valve incident report, so treat it as a resolved widespread event—not proof of Steam's status at this moment.

QUICK ANSWER

Is Steam down, or is it just your client?

01

Several services fail

The store, friends, library sync, purchases, or sign-in all fail—or many users report the same screen. This points to a Steam-side incident. Wait and retry later.

02

One device fails

Your account works on the web or another device, while one client stays stuck. Fully exit Steam, restart the device, then try the supported cache step.

03

One network fails

Steam works on another connection. Restart the router, disable a newly added proxy or VPN temporarily, and check firewall rules without disabling security entirely.

Important: an endless loading screen during a confirmed outage is not evidence that your account or game library is damaged.

LOW-RISK FIX ORDER

Try these fixes in order

  1. Check for a wider Steam outage.

Look for failures across multiple Steam services and a sudden burst of matching reports. If the problem is widespread, stop here and wait; local changes cannot repair a server incident.

  2. Fully exit and reopen Steam.

Use Steam → Exit rather than only closing the window. On Windows, confirm Steam is no longer running in Task Manager; on macOS, use Steam → Quit Steam.

  3. Restart the computer or Steam Deck.

Valve's client troubleshooting guidance recommends a full restart because it clears temporary system state and releases locked resources.

  4. Test the account and connection.

Try the Steam website or another device. If only one network fails, restart the router and temporarily remove a recently added VPN or proxy from the path.

  5. Clear the download cache only after the service recovers.

In Steam, open Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache. Steam Support says this does not remove installed games, but it signs you out, so have your credentials and Steam Guard access ready.

  6. Use Steam Support if sign-in still fails.

If the same account fails after services are healthy—or you see security, lock, or credential warnings—use the official recovery flow instead of repeatedly changing settings.

PLATFORM NOTES

Windows, Mac, Steam Deck, and GeForce NOW

Windows

Exit Steam and confirm its processes have ended before reopening it. A system restart is preferable to deleting client folders.

macOS

Quit Steam from its menu, not only the window controls. Restart the Mac before changing network or library files.

Steam Deck

Restart the Deck from the power menu. If both Gaming Mode and Desktop Mode fail during a widespread incident, wait before resetting anything.

GeForce NOW

If the loop is inside the cloud session, it may involve Steam's sign-in service or the cloud integration. Reinstalling the local Steam app is unlikely to affect that session.

AVOID DATA LOSS

What not to do first

  • Do not delete the steamapps folder or your game library.
  • Do not uninstall Steam while a widespread outage is still active.
  • Do not reset your password repeatedly unless Steam reports a credential or security problem.
  • Do not disable antivirus or firewall protection entirely to test a login screen.
  • Do not follow a “fix” that asks for your password, Steam Guard code, or remote access.

FAQ

Loading User Data questions

Why is Steam stuck on Loading User Data?

The client has not completed the account-data stage of sign-in. The cause can be a Steam-side service incident, a local client state problem, or a network path that cannot complete the request. The number of affected services and devices helps separate them.

Will clearing the download cache delete my games?

No. Steam Support says the supported cache-clearing option does not affect installed games. It will sign you out, so make sure you can complete Steam Guard verification before using it.

How long should I wait during an outage?

There is no reliable fixed duration. Wait until service reports fall and at least one official Steam surface works again, then fully restart the client and retry once.

Why did a newly purchased game not appear?

During a store or account-service incident, purchase completion and library synchronization can be delayed. Check your purchase history after services recover before buying the game again.

Should I reinstall Steam?

Not as an early step. A reinstall is disruptive and cannot repair a Steam-side outage. Exhaust the status check, full restart, device restart, network test, and official cache option first.
